Learn how to transfer designs onto fusible web, apply it to fabrics and place onto your quilt tops, totes or any other fabric project. You will be tracing, cutting and placing pieces to create a design onto a background. It will be a perfect time to practice walking foot quilting and binding skills as well. This project can be used in multiple ways, as a center block for a quilt, wall hanging, or display on a metal stand.
Bring basic sewing supplies as including but not limited to: sewing machine with power cords, thread, machine needles, snips or trimming scissors, seam ripper.
These additional supplies will be needed: pencil with eraser, scissors for cutting paper, small ironing mat and travel iron if you have one, and best press. ⅝ yard of trans-web or steam a seam lite, applique pressing sheet is helpful but not required.
Our block is a 12” inch square. Your scraps do not need to be larger than a 10” x 10” square each. A little extra is better than not having enough!
It is imperative that the homework is done prior to class and that your background piece is brought sewn and pressed. We will work on appliqué pieces only and apply them to the background. Use a pants hanger with clips to hold your background piece where it hangs nice and flat.
We will begin working our way through Nancy Halvorsen's Book, Count On It. If you do not have this book, we have it available in shop and offer a 10% discount for workshop students.
On Page 3 of the book, the required materials are listed for each block. This will consist of either fat quarters or 1/3 yard cuts. You may bring your own fabrics from your stash, purchase your own fabrics individually or you may purchase a block kit for $14.99, Kits must be reserved at least 1 week in advance! Y0u will need to pick up your kit and have homework completed.
We will begin with the February Block because at the end of the year in December, your last block will be January. This way, we complete a block the month in advance so that you can enjoy the block on display.

When you arrive for class: Set up your machine and push it back just a bit so that you have room to work on a flat surface prior to sewing. Don’t forget to bring fusible web and a pencil, be ready to trace!
We will trace our designs onto our trans-web or steam a seam lite, then we will cut design and, iron to the coordinating fabric for that particular piece. We will then apply our pieces to the background.
After our design is laid out and fused. we will also stitch down our appliqué pieces by machine. You will then have an opportunity to also do some machine quilting with a walking foot in class.
You will complete your binding and any embellishments on your own if time does not allow.
